NOTE: The free “RSLogix Micro Starter Lite” software only works with the MicroLogix 1000, MicroLogix 1100, and free SLC-500/MicroLogix Emulator, Emulate500.

If you need help learning to use RSLogix, check out my Five-Star rated PLC Basics online course. It comes with support and never expires.

Automation Tech Tip Video:

Article: How to download RSLogix Micro, RSLinx, & Emulate 500

Step 1) Navigate to http://www.ab.com:

Step 2) Select “Support” from the Top Menu of Rockwell’s website:

Step 3) Under “Product Support” select “Drivers and Firmware”:

Step 4) Now search for “1763”:

Step 5) Select “1763-Lxxx” from the list, and then choose version “10.000”:

Step 6) Next click on the “Downloads” button on the right:

Step 7) And now click on the small, gray “Download” icon found to the right of the 10.000 version number and to the left of the orange PDF icon:

Step 8) At this point you may be asked to sign in with your free Rockwell website account:

NOTE: If you don’t already have a free account for Rockwell’s website, go ahead and create one using a valid email address as you will need to open the email they send and confirm your registration. Once your account is setup, sign in so you can continue with the download.

Step 9) In the popup window that comes up, scroll to the bottom and then select the check-boxes for RSLogix Micro Starter Lite w/o RSLinx EN, RSLogix Emulate 500, and RSLinx Classic Lite as shown below. Once selected, click on the “Downloads” link on the top right of the window:

Step 15) If you do, you will see this next window that has individual links to download each file:

If you run into issue using RSLogix, feel free to sign-up to my Locals community and I’ll help you there.

Or grab my PLC Basics course at TheAutomationSchool.com and I’ll support you there.

Compatibility Note: Below you’ll find a screenshot of Rockwell’s website showing which versions of Windows 7 RSLogix Micro 8.3 is supported on (it does work well on Windows 10, but the free version is not officially supported on it:)

Over on the Antaira website we have a new piece about the growing use of Industrial Automation in the Agriculture space. In the article they detail many of the demands of these systems, and why selecting a reliable Industrial Ethernet Switch is so important. To read this article, click here.

The latest article at SME that sparked my interest is the new article entitled, “Moving Past People, Planet, and Profit.” Don’t let the title fool you, this is an article covering the many aspects of production that can be considered when looking at reducing waste, and you can read the full article here.

Digi-Key also has a new article our detailing the considerations that go into creating compact and flexible circuits that have accurate circuit protection that meet IEC and UL standards. Those of you electronically inclined will find the article here.

The folks over at ISA also have several new articles out, and the one that I found the most interesting was “Complexity and Contention: The Future of Digital Infrastructure.” While I don’t see all the technology they mention as factors in the future of industrial automation, many are, and the key take-a-way for me was the importance of designing your facility’s digital infrastructure with the future in mind. You can see if you agree by reading the article here.

Over at the Global American site we find a new article entitled, “Demystifying USB C,” which I found not only interesting but something I’ll probably come back to and share when questions about USB come up in the future. If you’re also interested in this topic you’ll find the original article here.

And our final article for this morning is from the good folks over at LabForge. In their article about Bin Packing Robots and Machine vision, the cover the key items that come to play when designing a system where the Robot Arm must pick out certain items from a bin of mixed parts. Daily Industrial Automation Rundown:

This Wednesday morning we cover new Podcasts, several new Products, as well as new Downloads and Literature.

First up is the latest episode of The Automation Podcast in which I sit down with Scott Preston from Antaira to learn about their line of Industrial Ethernet Switches. You can view or listen to this episode on your favorite Podcasting platform or right here on The Automation Blog.

Next up is a new podcast from the folks at SME discussing Knowledge Transfer during the current Labor Shortage. The interview is with the CEO of an MES company, and I found the discussion might be best suited for those in charge of whole departments or facilities, as discussion covers higher level strategies. Interested readers can listen to the podcast here.

As far as new product press releases, we’ll start with one from Bosch Rexroth and their “Locator” system. Essentially, this system is designed to allow mobile robots to independently determine their position without users needing expert knowledge to commission them. Their Locator product allows the robots to determine their position and orientation using compatible industrial controllers and laser sensors, and without physical markings and manual training. To learn more, check out the article here.

Over on the A3 website we have a news article about a recently release plugin for Robotmaster, an offline programming and simulation tool for robots. This new plugin allows the importing of Mastercam CAD/CAM data into a robotic program. To learn more, check out the article here.

nVent announced the release of a new line of Stainless Steel Enclosures and Air Conditioners for Extreme Environments. Features of the HOFFMAN Extreme Environments line includes a Adhesive-free gasket mounting, new hinge design with lift-off door, multiple corrosion resistance options, including for internal protection. To find out more, check out the full article here.

Festo Introduced an Online 3D CAD Configurator for Actuators and Accessories.  The easy to use configurator allows users to select an actuator and then select “hot spots” on the 3D model to select each accessory. To learn more, click here.

Prosoft Technology has a new article up about requirements of extreme environments, like IP rating, Conformal Coating, and Temperature Ratings, all used to remind the reader that Prosoft offers Extreme rated modules for Rockwell XT line of ControlLogix products. To read the article, click here.

On the new literature front, Siemens just released an update to their S7 System Comparison manual. This manual compares the features and functions of the S7-300, 400, 1200, and 1500, and can be downloaded here.

And as far as software updates go, MDT just released a new security update for AutoSave versions prior to v8.5. Users running those older versions are encouraged to apply the update. For more information, click here.
