Migrate / Convert – Working Around Translate PLC-5 SLC 2.0 Utility’s Syntax Error

Translate PLC-5 SLC 2.0 Featured Image

A few weeks ago, a client asked me to review his SLC-500 program files. He wanted my advice on how difficult it would be to convert them to CompactLogix.

UPDATE – November 2021 by SMT: Rockwell no longer makers the Translation Tool or Project Migrator available as a download, so if you don’t have either in your RSLogix/Studio 5000 installation files or discs, you can try the “new” feature in RSLogix500 v12 and RSLogix5 v10 which allows you to save your program as a Logix file by using the “save as type” menu option, and choosing “Logix Designer Files (*.ACD)” For more information see the free tech note below:

When I received his files, the first thing I did was power on my primary Windows 7 64bit virtual machine. Then I opened each of his .RSS files in RSLogix 500 v9, and saved them in the .SLC format required by Rockwell’s “Translate PLC-5 SLC 2.0” utility.

Next, as I attempted to translate the first .SLC file using the utility, I received the following error: “Syntax Error at line 7.” As I tried each of the remaining files I received similar errors.

Translate PLC-5 SLC 2.0 Step 1With no obvious solution, I headed off to Rockwell’s knowledgebase to see if there was a documented fix. I tried several different keyword searches, but found nothing related to this error.

Frustrated, I booted my Windows XP Pro 32bit virtual machine up. Then I ran thought the entire process again with RSLogix 500 version 8.3. This time all of the files converted successfully.

I didn’t think about this again until a couple of weeks later when a different client called frustrated with the same issue. I told him I’d also had this problem and thought I had found a workaround. Since the client was in the field, I offered to do the conversion for him and a short while later his file appeared in my email inbox.

Translate PLC-5 SLC 2.0 Step 4_xThis time I went directly to my Windows XP Pro vm, and ran through the same procedure as before. However, I expectantly received the same error that I had previously only seen in Windows 7. Not knowing really what to do, I tried importing the .SLC back into RSLogix 500 v8.3, and then re-exporting it to a .SLC file. Surprisingly this worked, and I was able to send the client back the converted file.

Not seeing a patterned, and previously not finding anything on Rockwell’s Knowledgebase, I thought it time to call Rockwell’s Tech Support. When I explained the issue to the Tech on the phone, he said there was an internal Tech Note about this issue. He said the quickest fix was to open the .SLC file in a text editor and delete all the lines pertinent to the I/O configuration.

I thanked him for the suggestion, and left them with one of my own. I asked him to consider making a public Knowledgebase document on this issue to help others who might also run into it. To his credit, a  couple of days later he left me a voicemail saying a newly published tech note addressing this issue had been created: Rockwell Tech Note 576939 (this tech note currently requires a Tech Connect contract.)

Translate PLC-5 SLC 2.0 Step 4_3Now whenever I run into a frustrating issue like this, I try to write up a quick email and send it out to my colleagues. My hope in doing this is to save them from having to troubleshoot the same issue I did.

This time, shortly after sending my email, I received a reply from my colleague Joe. He wrote me back saying he had run into the same issue in the past, but had come across an easier solution.

If you look closely at the Translate PLC-5 SLC 2.0 Utility error window, you’ll notice a small line of text right above the white text box which reads, “Fix the error within the file in the edit box below.” I would never have guessed that the white text box was editable, since most of these popups are just simple notification windows. But as Joe rightly pointed out, you can simply delete the offending I/O lines right from this window, and then continue on with the conversion successfully.

To be honest, I’m still not sure what causes this error in Rockwell’s “Translate PLC-5 SLC 2.0.” utility. But knowing the above work-arounds has turned out to be quite helpful.

If you also find these work-arounds helpful, please take a moment and visit our Support page for several ideas on how you can help us.

PanelView Plus 6 – Firmware: Is Flashing Taking Hours? How To Flash In 5 Minutes.

ME Firmware Upgrade Wizard Featured Image

Last week a client told me it was taking him up to four hours to flash the firmware on his PanelView Plus 6. In fact, it takes so long he avoids doing it whenever possible.

ME Firmware Upgrade Wizard Step 1
I honestly hadn’t flashed my PVPlus 6 in quite some time, so I downloaded the latest version of 6.1 firmware from Rockwell’s website and began flashing my unit. After over thirty minutes I was only at 14%, and I calculated I had nearly 3.5 hours left!

Having proved my client right, I proceeded to work on a hunch that the length of the flash was mostly do to the time it took to copy the flash file across the network. This I figured was not only the least efficient way to copy the file, but also exasperated by the fact that the client and I were both performing the firmware flash from within a virtual machine.

So playing a hunch I tried flashing my PanelView Plus 6 again, but this time using the option to create a “firmware flash card.” I didn’t have an SD card on me at that time, so I opted to use my USB memory stick instead.

ME Firmware Upgrade Wizard Step 2I knew from past experience that the “target” of the PanelView Plus firmware utility wouldn’t be formatted. The utility just copies an AutoRun.exe file to the root of the memory device, and creates an Update folder to hold the update files. And the best part is the process to setup the memory card to flash the PVPlus takes under a minute.

ME Firmware Upgrade Wizard Step 6Once you’ve finished preparing your memory card or USB drive, you just plug it into your PVPlus. After doing so, the autorun.exe will launch and you’ll be presented with an upgrade screen. And once you start the upgrade process, you can sit back and allow it to do it’s thing.

ME Firmware Upgrade Wizard Step 9.2NOTE: While upgrading my PVPlus didn’t erase my .MER files, sometimes the process will. So, as a standard operating procedure you should always backup any device you’re about to firmware flash.

While I confirmed upgrading the PanelView Plus 6’s firmware over Ethernet can take hours, both times I ran the firmware upgrade using my USB memory stick the process took under 5 minutes. This is a huge improvement, so much so that I can see going back to flashing my PVPlus over the network.

Hopefully this information about how you can quickly flash your PanelView Plus 6 will be helpful too you, and save you some time in the coming year.

If it does help and you would like to thank us, please take a moment to visit our Support page for some ideas on how you can.

And for those who prefer step-by-step instructions, stay tuned to our next blog which will detail each step in the process.

Why won’t RSLinx Enterprise show up in Emulate 5000?

Emulate 5000 No RSLinx Enterprise Featured Image

SoftLogix 5800 with Processor but No RSLinx EnterpriseLast week a client sent me a CompactLogix file and PanelView Plus file to review.

To test these files together I usually change the CompactLogix file into an Emulator file in RSLogix 5000, and then download it to Emulate 5000 (a processor emulator for RSLogix 5000.)

Once this is done, I open the PanelView Plus project in ViewStudio and modify the RSLinx Enterprise (RSLE) shortcut to point at the emulator. However, in this case when I proceeded to update my RSLE shortcut, browsing the virtual backplane didn’t display my emulated processor?

RSLinx Enterprise does not find SoftLogix processorSo, I first restarted the RSLE service, and when that didn’t work I restarted my virtual PC. With it still not working, I headed of to the Rockwell Knowledgebase and the only helpful advice it had was to reinstall RSLinx Enterprise. After a painfully long re-install of RSLE, I was indeed able to browse to my emulated processor, update my shortcut, and test the ViewStudio project.

Once that issue was resolved, I ran into a second issue. As I was emulating a CompactLogix file, and those processors are located in slot 0, I attempted to put my virtual processor in slot 0 of the virtual backplane, However, when I right clicked on slot 0 the only versions available were v17 – v20, but my client’s file was version 16.

SoftLogix 5800 add processor to slot 0I was a little confused as I was running Emulate 5000 v20, which on Windows XP should had provided support for version 12 to 20. After confirming this fact in the product’s release notes, I tried another slots and was able to chose from versions 12-20. I didn’t research this further, but thought it was worth passing on since I hadn’t noticed this slot / version restriction before.

SoftLogix 5800 add processor to slot 1I hope the above information about why RSLE might not show up in Emulate 5000 is helpful.

Why won’t RSLogix 5000 v16 find my activation?

RSLogix 5000 Failed To Activate Featured Image

Last week a client sent me his RSLogix 5000 v16 file to review.

RSLogix 5000 Splash ScreenIt was a slow week, and I honestly didn’t expect looking over his files would take more than an hour or so. Boy was I wrong!

Because the client sent me an older v16 file, I fired up my Windows XP VMware virtual machine on which I have several RSLogix 5000 versions installed. Once booted, I used the shared folders feature to copy the clients files to my virtual desktop and proceeded to open his ACD file.

And this is where things started to go wrong. After the RSLogix 5000 splash screen appeared, I received a notice from RSLogix 5000 saying it couldn’t find my FactoryTalk Activation (FTA.) I thought this odd as I knew everything was working just a few days ago…

RSLogix 5000 Failed To ActivateOccasionally this error has appeared in the past, and the first thing I checked was to be sure the FactoryTalk Activation Manger on my virtual machine was finding the activations installed on my “host” system. If it hadn’t, I would then need to troubleshoot my VM’s network.

Since the FTA Manager did find my activations, the next thing I checked was the time in my VM’s OS. I had previously disabled time syncing on some of my VM’s, and later found if the time difference between the FTA client and server was more than a few minutes Rockwell applications would not activate (even though the activations would continue to show up in the FTA manager.) But in this case my VM and Host times were in sync.

Knowing I had just been working on a v20 application earlier in the week, I found that project file and double clicked it. Unfortunately, using the RSLogix 5000 shortcut will only open RSLogix 5000 in the last version used. In this case that was now version 16, which wouldn’t let me past the activation screen. So the only quick way (I know of) to open any other version and bypass the activation popup was to launch RSLogix 5000 by double clicking on a different version ACD project file.

RSLogix 5000 Failed To Activate Version 16As I expected, v20 launched with no issue. And since my first two steps indicated my FTA was working fine, I next tested creating new RSLogix 5000 files in the other versions I had installed. All worked except for version 16.

Having isolated the problem to v16, I headed to Rockwell’s Knowledge Base and began searching for a solution. I searched, and searched. I tried many different keyword combinations, but none of the results were of any help.

Frustrated, I tried upgrading from v16.03 t0 16.04 to see the newer minor rev. would resolve the issue, but it didn’t. I then uninstalled and reinstalled v20.01 thinking v16 might have overwritten some important newer files, but this also didn’t resolve the issue.

Out of ideas, and a few hours lost to trial and error, I finally reached for the phone and called Rockwell Tech Support. However, following the universal “Murphy’s law,” Rockwell’s phone support had the day off!

Before giving up, I made one last attempt at finding my answer on Rockwell’s Knowledgebase. I decided to simplify my search as much as possible, using only two keywords in my search criteria:  “16” and “activation.” Like clouds parting in the sky to let rays of light through, there at the very top of the search results was (public) Tech Note 525076, which directly address the issue I was having.

The Tech Note explains that when RSLogix 5000 version 16 won’t activate while other versions do, the simple fix is to copy the “rsl5kcp.dll” file from the v17 program folder (C:\Program Files\Rockwell Software\RSLogix 5000\ENU\v17\Bin) to the v16 program folder (C:\Program Files\Rockwell Software\RSLogix 5000\ENU\v16\Bin) overwriting the v16 version of that file with the v17 version. Doing this immediately fixed my v16 activation issue.

Hopefully if you’re running into the same issue and struggled like me to find the correct knowbase doc, this blog will help you in find it quicker than search the knowbase directly.

And if you have questions or have run into the same issue please feel free to share you comments with us by using the “post a comment or question” link below.

Changes planned for Insights in Automation in 2014

2014

2014

Just a quick post to announce some planned changes coming to the network of “Insights in Automation” websites in 2014.

Update: You can listen to our plans for 2014 in the companion podcast HERE.

First. we plan on continuing to update InsightsInAutomation.com with links to the new content being posted on The Automation Blog, The Automation Minute, and The Automation Podcast.

However, we’re moving away from separate weekly roll-ups for each site. Instead, we plan to post short weekday updates for all sites combined, followed by a full weeks roll-up on the weekend (similar to yesterday’s “This Week’s Insights” article.)

We don’t expect this change to affect visitors coming to the site(s) by means of internet search’s. However, we do think it will greatly help our daily readers who will soon be able to visit a single site, “www.InsightsInAutomation.com” to find the link to that weekday’s post.

We’re hoping this change will result in a better experience all around, but if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions please don’t hesitate to leave them by either using the “post a comment or question” link below, or by sending them to us by using the contact form available from the “contact” link at the top of the site.

Until next time, Peace ✌️
