CCW – How to Import and Export Variables and Comments in Connected Components Workbench

Import-Export-Micro800-Vars-Comments-FiConnected Components Workbench (CCW) version 7.0 added some much needed usability features when it released back in September of 2014.

One of those welcome features was a context-sensitive right click menu for accessing common tasks.

In today’s article, I show you how to use that menu to export and import variables and their comments in the below steps.

Step 1) Open Micro800 project, right click on controller, select “Variable Import/Export”

The first step is to open the Micro800 project you want to export variables (and their documentation) from.

Once your project is open in Connected Components Workbench (CCW) v7.0 (or later,) right click on the Micro800 controller found at the top left of the Project Organizer.

Now from the right click menu choose “Variable Export/Import” as shown below:

Note: This menu item pertains to the Global Variables

Import-Export-Micro800-Vars-Comments-1Step 2) Choose a file location and name for your export file

Once step one is complete, you should see a “Variable Export/Import” popup window.
Click on the browse button to continue.

If you would like to view the export file in Microsoft Excel, select “Yes,” otherwise select “No.”
Import-Export-Micro800-Vars-Comments-5Step 6) Right click on Program to export Program Variables

If you would also like to export Program Variables, right click on the Program in question (not the Program Variables) and then select “Variable Export/Import”

Import-Export-Micro800-Vars-Comments-6

Step 7) Repeat Steps 2-5 to complete the export

To complete the export of the Program Variables, repeat steps 2-5 while giving the new export file a unique name.

Import-Export-Micro800-Vars-Comments-7Step 8) Repeat the above process to import variables by selecting the “Import Variables” tab of the “Variable Export/Import” popup window.

To import Variables (along with their comments) repeat the process for exporting but now choose the “Import Variables” tab of the “Variable Export/Import” popup window.

Step 9) Check the import status to insure import succeeded

Once the import is complete, a window will popup at the bottom of CCW.

Micro800, CCW – How to Change the Controller Type

Change-Micro800-Processor-Type-Fi

Change-Micro800-Processor-Type-FiConnected Components Workbench (CCW) version 7.0 added some much needed features when it released back in September of 2014.

One of those welcome features was a context-sensitive device menu for accessing common tasks.

In today’s article, I show you how to use that menu to change the controller type (aka Micro800 model) of an existing program in just three easy steps.

Step 1) Open Micro800 project, right click on controller and select change

The first step is to open your Micro800 project in Connected Components Workbench (CCW) version 7.0 or 8.0.

Once open, right click on the Micro800 controller which is found at the top of the Project Organizer on the left of the screen.

Now from the right click menu choose “Change Controller” as seen below:

Change-Micro800-Processor-Type-1NOTE: The change controller feature in CCW version 7 and 8 does not support the Micro810.

To work around this, export your Micro810 project and them import it into a new project setup for the new controller you wish to change to.

Step 2) Choose new controller and click Ok

Once step one is complete, you should see a “Controller Change” popup  window.
On the left side of this window you should see a dropdown list for the “Target” “Controller Type.”

To continue, click on the drop down list and select the Micro800 controller you would like your program changed to, as seen below:

Change-Micro800-Processor-Type-2

NOTE: If you are using CCW version 7, the “change to” version will be 7. If you are using CCW version 8, the “change to” version will be 8.

Step 3) Verify change was successful

After a few moments you should see a popup window displayed at the bottom of CCW.
Inside that window you should see a message stating the “Controller Change” was successful, as seen below:

Change-Micro800-Processor-Type-3

I hope you found the above article about how to change a Connected Components Workbench’s controller type helpful.

Deal of the Week: Micro PLC’s and Cables

Deals of the Week:

I’m always on the lookout for a good deal, and the ones below caught my eye this week:

Note: Below I point out some great prices I’ve found, but with the ebay items please read all of the seller’s notes and take the seller’s rep into account before purchasing 🙂

Generic 1761-CBL-PM02

I’ve purchased this cable myself and found it works great.

It’s longer than the official Rockwell PM02 cable, and does have the right angle mini-din on the PLC end.

The price is really hard to beat too as the Rockwell version is around $80.

The Engineers Are Leaving – what to do before they do

The Engineers Are Leaving

The day has finally arrived.  FAT and SAT tests are complete.  All punch list items are closed.

The commissioning engineers are about to leave your site, handing over the keys to your new automation system as they depart.

This is as nice and as good as the system will ever be, when you think about it.
The Engineers Are LeavingIf there are no plant-specific procedures for keeping track of changes or problems with a system, perhaps this is the best time to invest a little time and a little money to come up with some.

It can be as simply as a Spiral-ring binder, with the machine name on the front, and a pen attached, and hung near the main panel.

Audit Trail, Change Log – give it a name and watch things get entered into it as the system gets put through its REAL paces, with real product and real operators.

What things should you be doing before they do that? After all, even though they will only be a phone call or remote connection away, you are still the first line of defense.

So, on the assumption that some preparation has already taken place, this is a good time to reflect on the things that might have been missed.

Run / Connect / Open / Modify / Close / Disconnect / Stop.

You should know, or should be able to observe or interview the on-site commissioning engineers to make sure that you know the exact steps to:

  • TheEngineersAreLeaving_2Run the application monitoring software
  • Connect to the equipment
  • Open the application files
  • Modify the program or data values
  • Close the application file (and save)
  • Disconnect the application monitoring software (and cable)
  • Stop the application monitoring software

While these steps might be written in manufacturer’s documentation, the commissioning engineers are a good resource to have for all the things that the manufacturer does not include in their documentation.

You will learn any special things that need to be done in advance, or after the action.
Service Packs, application extensions…the commissioning engineers already have all this up and running on their laptops, and you should too.

If time allows and contract terms are so written, perhaps a shoulder-to-shoulder informal training session, for one person on your staff along with a mobile-phone video, or other recording.

You know you’ll need all this as soon as the plane take off.

Happy Commissioning!

Jeffrey D. Brandt

Insights Inbox: RSLogix 5000 won’t install, can’t find MSXML

RSLogix-5000-MSXML-Error-Fi

In today’s edition of “Insight’s Inbox” we answer a reader’s question on how to work around the RSLogix 5000 MSXML install issue.

Reader Question:

RSLogix-5000-MSXML-ErrorI’m trying to install RSLogix 5000 20.03 onto a Windows XP VMware image and the installation stops telling me it can install MSXML4? Is there anyway around this?

Insight’s Answer:

In my own experience, some versions of RSLogix 5000 have issues installing some components from a network drive, specifically the ones used by VMware.

When I attempted to install RSLogix 5000 v20.03 onto a Windows 7 Pro 32bit VM I recently created, I received an error stating that it could not and to check the install log.
In the install log I found this error:

RSLogix 5000 Setup: Begin MSXML4 installation
RSLogix 5000 Setup: End MSXML4 installation 3: The system cannot find the path specified.
RSLogix 5000 Setup: End loading step: Checking MSXML version
RSLogix 5000 Setup: An error occurred during loading

Suspecting an issue with the remote path, I searched the install DVD and found “msxml.msi” in the “x:RSLogix5000System” directory.

I went ahead ran the file manually, and it installed without issue.
RSLogix 5000 MSXMLThen when I attempted to install RSLogix 5000 v20.03 again, it did indeed install without any more problems.

I then installed v20.01 and v20.04 in there own VM’s and neither of them had this same issue, so it may be unique to version 20.03?

Side Note: Version 20.04  and Online Books

On a side note, while RSLogix 20.04 was installing it could not find the online books install file.
And no matter where I located that file, even locally in the VM, still could not find it.

So when the RSLogix 5000 install was finished, I just manually ran the “RSLogix%205000%20Online%20Books.msi” file and it seemed to install the online books without issue.

I hope you’ve found today’s Insight’s Inbox about working around the “msxml” install issue helpful.
