ViewSE – v8.1 Released

FactoryTalk View Studio Splash Fi

Late last week Rockwell Automation released version 8.1 of FactoryTalk View Site Edition.

In Today’s article I cover its new features and system requirements, cautions about upgrading, and ask you if you’ll be upgrading right away or holding off?

New features in ViewSE 8.1

New Distributed Application Manager tool

  • Simplifies the backup and restore of network distributed applications using a single tool.

Better design-time support for multiple monitors

  • FactoryTalk-View-8-Splash-FiIf you close View Studio 8.1 after using it on a multi-monitor system, and later restart it on a single monitor system, it will now re-dock the Explorer and Diagnostic windows, and move all other windows to the primary display.
  • Prior to this change I’ve been told you could not access windows positioned on the second monitor when you returned to a single monitor system.

NOTE: While this enhancement is not listed in the release notes, I was able to confirm with the good folks at Rockwell that it was just an oversight, and it is in fact present in View Studio SE 8.1.

Added support for testing displays with tag placeholders

  • You can now test your displays and global objects with parameters (like #1, #2, etc) in View Studio without having to run the project.

New security functions

  • These new functions (CurrentComputerHasGroup, CurrentComputerGroups) return whether the current computer or user is in the assigned group when used in VBA.

Subscribe to patch notifications during install

  • At the end of the installation process you can now subscribe to be notified about new product updates and patches when they are released in Rockwell’s Knowledgebase.

On-screen keyboard changes

  • The on-screen keypad now shows the tag name, tag description, units, and min/max limits when available.
  • You can also configure if the on screen keyboard shows via clicking objects, as well as assign security codes

Popup window position enhancement

  • You can now choose to have popup windows appear close to the object which issues the Display command

Specify client window size

  • You can specify the client window size when configuring a new client at runtime

Alarm grouping

  • Alarms can now be organized by logical groups

FactoryTalk Alarm and Event support for groups

  • FTViewSE 8.1 RNFTAE now includes new functions supporting alarm groups. They are supported in any expression in a FT View SE application.

Alarm Migration tool

  • This tool is designed to help users migrate legacy Tag DB HMI alarms to Alarms and Events tag-based alarms.

Electronic signature button update

  • You can now set the values for String, DateTime, and Boolean tags

New FactoryTalk View File Viewer

  • You can use the new File Viewer to view and save ME and SE datalog files, as well as view Machine Edition Alarm and Recipe Plus files.

Cautions about migrating to ViewSE 8.1

While the release notes do contain several things you’ll want to be aware of, the big one for me pertains to ViewPoint.

I’ve been told that ViewPoint 8.1, which is replacing Silverlight with HTML 5 to support mobile devices (very cool,) has been delayed until the Fall.

So if you’re currently using ViewPoint, for the cleanest and easiest transition I suggest holding off until ViewPoint itself is updated to 8.1.

And even then, I recommend reading the ViewPoint 8.1 release notes prior to upgrading.

ViewSE 8.1 System Requirements

The recommended computer specs for running ViewSE 8.1 include: Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.66GHZ, and 2GB of RAM.

ViewSE 8.1 also supports these operating systems: Windows XP SP3 32Bit, Windows 7 Pro 32 & 64bit, Windows 8 & 8.1 32 and 64 bit, and Windows Server 2008 and 2012.

Find out more about ViewSE 8.1

If you would like to view the FactoryTalk View Site Edition release notes, well unfortunately right now they don’t seem to be online anyware 🙁

Unlike Studio 5000, I could not find the FTView release notes in the PCDC, and the last update I could find on the RA KB is for 6.1 (as of 9/2.)

So, unless you actually download 8.1 your only option may be to drop your local Rockwell rep an email to request them.

Update: Shortly after this article was published, Rockwell posted the FactoryView ME and SE release notes from version 5.0 – 8.1 in the below public (free) tech note:

Special thanks to Sharon Billi for letting us know!

So, what do you think of the new features in ViewSE 8.1? Will you hold off due to being a ViewPoint user?

Or will you jump on 8.1 right away because of one of the many newly added features?
You can let us know your thoughts via the “post a comment or question” link below.

Until next time, Peace ✌️

FactoryTalk View Machine Edition 8.1 Released

FactoryTalk-View-8-Splash-Fi

Late last week Rockwell Automation released version 8.1 of FactoryTalk View Machine Edition.

The recommended computer specs for running ViewME 8.1 include: Intel Pentium 4 2GHZ, 2GB of RAM, and 2GB of Hard disk space.

FactoryTalk-View-8-Splash-FiNote: Personally, I think these specs are too low! I would recommend using the ones for Studio 5000 27 instead.

ViewME 8.1 also supports these operating systems: Windows XP SP3 32Bit, Windows 7 Pro 32 & 64bit, Windows 8 & 8.1 32 and 64 bit, and Windows Server 2012.

  • Prior to this change I’ve been told you could not access windows positioned on the second monitor when you returned to a single monitor system.

Additional 8.1 features

  • Support for MobileView terminals
  • Domain LDAP authentication optimizations

Cautions about migrating to ViewME 8.1

Studio 5000 Logix Designer Version 27 Released

Studio-5000-v27-Release-Notes-Fi

Late last week Rockwell Automation released version 27 of itStudio 5000 Logix Designer FIs Studio 5000 Logix Designer software for programming its CompactLogix and ControlLogix PACs.

The download package includes RSLinx 3.74 , as well as FactoryTalk Services Platform 2.74 and FactoryTalk Activation 3.62.11.

The recommended specs for running v27 include an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 20GB of Hard disk space.

What’s new in version 27?

Operating system support:

According to Rockwell, version 27 supports Windows 7 Pro (64bit) and Home Premium (32bit) with Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard with Service Pack 1, Microsoft Windows 8 and 8.1 Professional (64-bit), as well as Windows Server 2012 Standard.

Rockwell also states the product is expected to work on the above operating systems with no service packs installed, but those configurations are not tested.

Strangely, no mention of the recently release Windows 10 is found, so if you get it running on Windows 10 please let us know!

Usability Enhancements to Editors:

Version 27 includes the following usability enhancements:

  • SFC and FB editors now support Ctrl + Home and Ctrl + End navigation shortcuts.
  • Data Type editor now supports the ability to copy and paste table content from spreadsheet applications such as Microsoft Excel.
  • RLL now includes the ability to move the expression entry dialog box for CPT, CMP, FAL, and FSC instructions.
  • All language editors no longer have the “green color” indication when a routine’s parent task or program is inhibited, or when the routine is never called in the program.

New HMI Button Control instructions:

Studio-5000-v27-Release-Notes-FiVersion 27 also includes support for the HMI Button Control (HMIBC) instructions.

You use the HMIBC instructions alongside the new PanelView 5500 Human Machine Interface (HMI) device to allow high-speed HMI control of machine operations like jogging motors.

It’s said the HMIBC instruction also provides built-in comm diagnostics, which permit it to automatically reset if communication to the HMI is lost.

New support for Application Code Manager:

Last we have what is probably the biggest new feature in Studio 5000 Logix Designer: Support for Rockwell’s Application Code Manager (ACM).

This new tool is designed to allow much faster application development by providing an integrated code library system where users can store modular code for quick access and integration into their programs.

For more information on version 27 and to see the official product release notes, search Rockwell’s “versions” webpage for Studio 5000 Logix Designer, and then select the PDF icon near the version number as seen below:

Studio 5000 Logix Designer v27 Release Notes LinkSo where’s View Designer?

Great question! While searching for Studio 5000 I found the View Designer software came up as a separate download, and I’ll cover it in tomorrow morning’s blog.

So, what do you think of version 27 so far? Do you feel like the added features are too few to warrant a major release?

Or, are you of the mind that smaller, more frequent releases are better?

Let us know what you think by filling out the “post a comment or question” link below.

I also want to send out a special thanks to Mark E. for letting us know that v27 was now available to download – Thanks Mark!

RSLogix 5000 – v20.04 Released

RSLogix 5000 20.04 Release Notes

Late last week I was very happy to find that Rockwell had released RSLogix 5000 version 20.04.

Ok, so now you may be asking why this is such a big deal, right?
RSLogix 5000 20.04 Release NotesWell, as anyone who’s run into the 20.01 and 20.03 issue knows, the minor rev incompatibility has caused many problems in the field.

In fact, this is one of two recent issues that I’ve seen bring out the emotions of users both here on The Automation Blog as well as on Rockwell’s own official knowledgebase.

Well according to the releases notes, version 20.04 of RSLogix 5000 restores the minor version compatibility which was lost in version 20.03.

Yes, you read that right!

According to Rockwell’s own documentation, you can now install version 20.04 and open or go online with version 20.01 and 20.03 projects.

The best part is, opening and saving the projects does not make them incompatible with the older versions!

And new projects created in version 20.04 are automatically compatible with 20.01 and 20.03.

In fact, only 20.03 still remains a problem, as it will change any version 20.01 file it opens to 20.03.

That said, with 20.04 you can export a 20.03 project and make a few edits to the file to make it version 20.01 compatible again.

RSLogix 5000 20.04 Tech NoteWant to know more? Check out this well documented public Rockwell tech note for additional details:

And to find out what else was fixed in v20.04, including a whole slue of stability issues, just search for RSLogix 5000 on Rockwell’s below version webpage:

So what do you think? Are you ready to uninstall version 20.01 or 20.03 and move to 20.04?

Rockwell announces PanelView Plus 7 Performance models

08-20-15-PanelView-Plus-7-Performance-Fi

Late last week Rockwell Automation issued a press release officially announcing the PanelView Plus 7 Performance line of HMI’s.

08-20-15 PanelView Plus 7 PerformanceStating the new product “simplifies visualization for large applications,” Rockwell stressed the fact that this HMI could “reduce need for multiple HMIs, or replace PC-based HMI for centralized information-monitoring.”

To accomplish this, Rockwell built the PanelView Plus 7 Performance model with larger screen options, more powerful processors, and additional connectivity options over the existing PanelView Plus 7 Standard model.

Prior to the Performance model, the largest screen available on a Rockwell PanelView product was the 15″ PanelView Plus launched back in 2003.

Now with the PanelView Plus 7 Performance model, customers will have a choice of 6 different display sizes topping out at 19″.

And unlike the PanelView Plus 7 Standard models which are limited to 1 programmable controller connection, 25 displays, and 200 alarms, the greater processing power in the Performance model removes these limitations.

The Performance model also adds a two port device level ring ready switch, where as up to this point the Standard model has only offered a single Ethernet port.

For more PanelView Plus 7 Performance details, check out the product’s documents below:

So what do you think? Ready for a 19″ PVPlus, or is that overkill for your applications?

PanelView 5500 documents now in Literature Library

PanelView-5500-Literature-Fi

PanelView 5500 Product ProfileWhile working on another story, I became aware that Rockwell Automation has published several PanelView 5500 documents in its Literature Library.

The interesting part is, to my knowledge Rockwell has yet to release an announcement about the product’s release.

I also just checked, and as of noontime yesterday Rockwell still had not made the required software, Studio 5000 v27, available for download.

Edit: The day after this article was published we did confirm v27 and View Designer had been released, and the product page for the PV5500 was also live at AB.com.

One can only image that the official release of the product is very close, and would expect v27 to go live for downloads when the product is ready.

Below are all of the documents I could find for the PanelView 5500 in Rockwell’s literature library (I haven’t yet read them myself:)

“Flashback Friday!”

SLC-500-BlueCaseDemo-Fi

Today’s Flashback Friday article is a little different than previous editions.

Today I’m highlighting a piece of legacy hardware, the SLC-500 blue demo case.

When I got my first job in the automation industry back in 1990, the SLC-500 was the big deal with Allen-Bradley users.

Shawn-Teaches--SLC500-In-Albany-NY-1Similar in many ways to the PLC-5, the SLC-500 was substantially less expensive and in some ways much easier to use.

Because it was such a popular item, Rockwell actually manufactured and sold four different models of blue hard-case demos.

And I not only wrote my first SLC-500 program on one of these demos, I also used them extensively over the years in dozens of SLC-500 classes I taught.

The cases were simple, compact for the time, and surprisingly functional.

These cases were strong, and traveled very well. In all my years using them, I never actually had one break.

They were also very practical, as the cover became part of the demo’s stand, and the small array of pilot lights, illuminated push buttons, and selector switches were a good fit for those learning to write their first lines of ladder logic.

And when these demo cases first came out, we often taught our classes using the Hand Held Terminal which some models came with.

Shawn-Teaches--SLC500-In-Holyoke-MA-2These HHT’s, while primitive when compared to a PC, were miles ahead of the SLC-100’s and actually displayed multiple rungs at once.

If fact, as I was testing the HHT in the unit I recently acquired, the memories from using them back in the 90’s came flooding back.

After a couple of minutes, I actually looked like I knew what I was doing, writing test rungs and forcing some I/O to insure everything in the demo was working.

So, did you ever use one of these demos, and do you have any found memories using them?

If you do, I’d love to hear them! Just reply to this post using the “post a comment or question” section at the bottom of this page.

Until next time, Peace ✌️
