MicroLogix 1200, RSLinx Classic – Setup Communications and Download

So you need to know how to setup RSLinx Classic to communicate to an Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1200 in order to download or go online with RSLogix?

Well you’re in luck as in today’s article I’ll walk you step by step through how to setup RSLinx communications, as well as how to download or go online from RSLogix:

Notes and prerequisites: Before you begin, insure you have the correct software and programming cable. If your PC does not have a built-in serial port you’ll also need a USB to Serial converter. For images of the MicroLogix 1200 communications port see this article.

Step 1) Start by checking Windows Device Manager to determine your PC’s serial port COM number:

theautomationblog-ml1000-01

Step 2) Next launch RSLinx Classic, and then under the Communications menu select Configure Drivers:

theautomationblog-ml1000-02

Step 3) Then from the Available Driver Types drop down list select RS-232 DF1 Devices and then click on Add New:

theautomationblog-ml1000-03

Step 4) Accept the default name by clicking on OK:

theautomationblog-ml1000-04

Step 5) Now select the COM port you looked up earlier, and check to be sure you have plugged your MicroLogix 1200 into it:

theautomationblog-ml1000-05

Step 6) Now click on Auto-Configure. If your cables and Micro are in working condition, and your Micro is set to the default DF1 protocol, then you should see the message, “Auto Configuration Successful”:

theautomationblog-ml1000-06

Step 7) Now click on OK to close the RS-232 DF1 Devices driver window:

theautomationblog-ml1000-07

Step 8) And click on Close to close the Configure Drivers window:

theautomationblog-ml1000-08

Step 9) Next, double click on your new driver in the RSWho window as shown below:

theautomationblog-ml1000-09

Step 10) After a few seconds you should see your Micro appear under the AB_DF1-1 driver:

theautomationblog-ml1200-a

Step 11) Now open either RSLogix Micro or RSLogix 500, and then open your program file:

theautomationblog-ml1000-11

Step 12) Next, from the Comms menu select System Comms:

theautomationblog-ml1000-12

Step 13) In the popup Communications window expand your AB_DF1-1 driver and select your Micro:

theautomationblog-ml1200-b

Step 14) Then to download your program select the Download button. Alternatively, you could go online by selecting the Online button:

theautomationblog-ml1200-c

Step 15) At this point if you made any changes to your program you may be prompted to save it:

theautomationblog-ml1200-d

Step 16)  Next, confirm you would like to download your program into the Micro you selected:

NOTE: The MicroLogix PLC can only hold one program at a time, and downloading to it will erase the Micro’s current program. If you do not have a copy of the current program loaded in your Micro, you should first perform an upload and save.

theautomationblog-ml1200-e

Step 17) At this point if the Controller is different you will be asked to confirm the change and resize data tables:

Over two hours of PLC communications how-to

Good morning visitors,

If you’re new to The Automation Guy blog, this is where I post about what I’ve working on over at The Automation Blog, Minute, Podcast, and School.

Recently in preparation for recording some advanced communication lessons in my ControlLogix course, PAC Basics course, I took a break from filming lessons to created some new content for my YouTube channel.

The result is over two hours of free PLC communications videos releasing in the next three weeks.

It all starts with The Automation Minute Season 3, Episode 9, in which I discuss the odd fact that Rockwell now states you need RSLogix 500 to program the MicroLogix, while the much less expensive RSLogix Micro will do.

Next in Episode 10, we take a look at the programming cables needed to program the MicroLogix family of PLCs.

Then in Episode 11, 12, and 13 I walk viewers through configuring RSLinx and Downloading a new program to the MicroLogix 1000, 1200, and 1500.

And in Episode 14 and 15 I show how to setup RSLinx to communication to a MicroLogix 1100 and 1400 and download to them.

In Episode 16 and 17 I demonstrate how to communicate to a SLC-500 using Serial DF1, and then DH485.

The in Episode 18, I show connecting and downloading to a PLC-5 using Serial DF1. And in Episode 19 I show connecting to a SLC-504 and PLC-5 using a USB to DH+ converter.

And to wrap the series up, in The Automation Podcast Episode 36, I show where I find demos for all of the above PLC’s, as well as the process I used to re-configure and download them.

In total, the result is over two hours of free PLC connectivity videos which I’m hoping people will find useful for many years to come.

Until next time, Peace ✌️

MicroLogix – Programming Software: You don’t need to buy RSLogix 500

Over the last few months I’ve received several messages asking what the correct software is to program the MicroLogix line of programmable controllers.

This confusion surprises me since RSlogix Micro has been out since 2009, as can be seen in this story at Automation.com.

So what’s causing all of this confusion?

Well, it seems to be the vendor’s very own website…

theautomationblog-ml-sw-fiIf you visit any of the MicroLogix product pages over at ab.rockwellautomation.com, you’ll find they all state that you program the MicroLogix line with RSLogix 500.

Ok, for the record you can program MicroLogix PLCs with any edition of RSLogix 500 that is “as new or newer” than the MicroLogix you wish to program.

And it absolutely makes sense to use RSLogix 500 if you also have SLC-500 controllers to maintain.

But today RSLogix 500 is very expensive, costing many times the price of a MicroLogix PLC, so informing potential new customers that you have to use RSLogix 500 quite frankly seems self defeating.

Especially since you can purchase the MicroLogix programming software, RSLogix Micro, for a fraction of the price of the least expensive version of RSLogix 500.

In fact, if you’re using the MicroLogix 1000 or 1100 you can use the complete free version of RSlogix Micro.

Now before you ask, yes I have explained all this to one of the webmasters at Rockwell a few months back, but as you can see in the below episode of The Automation Minute, their website is still directing customers to RSLogix 500 even for the MicroLogix 1100 which has a free software option:

So if you know anyone who’s going to start using the MicroLogix line of programmable controllers, please pass on these tips to them and save them from potentially spending thousands when they may only need to spend a couple off hundred (or in the case of the 1000 and 1100, nothing at all.)

Update 04/09/2018:

While Rockwell has removed most of the documentation about RSLogix Micro from it’s website, I have located two legacy links which have some information.

First up is a free tech note (requires a free login to Rockwell’s website) which explains what is not included in RSLogix Micro that is in RSLogix 500. Note there are dead links in the article as well as other issues with the document:

https://rockwellautomation.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/501746

Next is a Product Profile comparing RSLogix Micro and Developer. This document is not as good as the documents Rockwell has removed or hidden behind their support paywall, but it will give you some idea as to what features each package has:

Happy Holidays from The Automation Blog!

happy-holidays-from-the-automation-blog

With the holidays upon us, I wanted to take this moment to wish all of you a very Happy Holiday!

I had hoped to have a few new articles and videos posted this week, as well as additional lessons for the courses over at TheAutomationSchool.com, but then life happened.

2016-12-berkshire-snowBetween cars breaking down, frozen pipes needing to be thawed, snow needing to be cleared, misbehaving automation equipment needing to be fixed, and all those little things that come up as the holidays approach, to say this week didn’t go as planned would be an understatement!

That said, I also plan to take much of next week off to visit with family, unwind, and take care of some personal things I’ve been putting off since starting the blog back in 2013.

So if I’m not back before the start of the new year, let me take this moment to wish you a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanuka, and Happy Kwanzaa!

Until next time, Peace ✌️

USB To Data Highway Plus (DHP, DH+) – Using the ANC-120e, a lower cost alternative to the 1784-U2DHP

In today’s episode of The Automation Podcast I take a look at the ANC-120e USB to Data Highway Plus converter from Automation Networks.

theautomationblog-anc-120e-scene-0Now you may be asking yourself why the folks over at Automation Networks would release a USB to DH+ converter when Rockwell already makes the 1784-U2DHP?

Well if you haven’t looked lately, that Rockwell cable now lists for a whopping $3,140, while the ANC-120e lists for $995.

But how well could a third party DH+ cable really work?

theautomationblog-anc-120e-scene-1As I demonstrate in today’s podcast, it actually works really well.

In fact, I couldn’t see any difference between my ControlLogix Gateway and the ANC-120e.

There must be some catch right? Like it’s hard to setup or something?

theautomationblog-anc-120e-scene-2Nope.

In fact, the entire podcast from un-boxing to making online edits in a SLC-5/04 and PLC-5/20, took less than 20 minutes.

So if you’re in the market for a USB to Data Highway Plus converter, or just curious to see how the ANC-120e works, check out Episode 35 of The Automation Podcast below:

PS – Special thanks goes out to the folks at Automation Networks for sending over the ANC-120e for me to test – thanks guys!

PlantPax fi

One of the new lessons I’ve recorded for my ControlLogix training course, PAC Basics, is how to download and use some of the AOIs included with Rockwell’s PlantPAx Library of Process Objects.

And since Rockwell made major changes to their website recently, I thought it also sense to update this article explaining how you go about getting Rockwell’s PlantPAx Library of Process Objects for free:

Steps To Download Rockwell’s PlantPAx Library Of Process Objects

Step 1) Open your web browser and navigate to http://www.ab.com:

Sample Code – How to download free A-B Sample Programs and AOIs

One of the topics I like to cover in my training courses is how users can get (and use) free sample code, programs, and AOIs made available by Rockwell Automation.

That said, since Rockwell made major changes to their website recently I thought it made sense to update this article showing how you go about getting those free downloads:

1) To start, navigate your browser to http://www.ab.com:

theautomationblog-samplecode-01

2) Next, under “Downloads” select “Sample Code”:

theautomationblog-samplecode-02

3) Here you will see a search box where you can search for sample code:

theautomationblog-samplecode-03a

Now that we’re here, let me point out some of my favorite downloads.

4) The first is actually a series of free programs for the MicroLogix which you can find by searching on “blocks”:

In the results above, the first item listed is the “Simple Motor Control” building block which is well worth checking out.

5) Some other great downloads are free AOIs for RSLogix and Studio 5000. To find them search on “aoi”:

6) Towards the bottom of these results you’ll find the “SCP” AOI, a great little piece of code for those who only have access to the Ladder Diagram language and need to scale raw values to engineering units without a lot of fuss:
