Recently, a client asked me which A-B Micro PLC’s supported HSC and PTO functions, as well as how fast each is. Below is the results of my research:

Note: The below are best case based on choosing the DC I/O model of the Micro with the most high speed digital inputs and outputs.

Micro800 family support for PTO outputs and HSC inputs.

Micro 830Select Micro850 models support:

  • Six high-speed 100 kHz counter inputs (HSC)
  • Three high-speed 100 kHz pulse train outputs (PTO)

Select Micro830 models support:

  • Six high-speed 100 kHz counter inputs (HSC)
  • Three high-speed 100 kHz pulse train outputs (PTO)

MicroLogix family support for PTO outputs and HSC inputs.

Select MicroLogix 1400 models support:

  • MicroLogix FamilyThree high-speed 100 kHz counter inputs (HSC)
  • Three high-speed 100 kHz pulse train outputs (PTO)

Select MicroLogix 1100 models support:

  • One high-speed 40 kHz counter input (HSC)
  • Two high-speed 40 kHz pulse train outputs (PTO)

Select MicroLogix 1500 models support:

  • MicroLogix Family Featured ImageTwo high-speed 20 kHz counter inputs (HSC)
  • Two high-speed 20 kHz pulse train outputs (PTO)

Select MicroLogix 1200 models support:

  • One high-speed 20 kHz counter input (HSC)
  • One high-speed 20 kHz pulse train output (PTO)

Select MicroLogix 1000 models support:

  • One high-speed 6.6 kHz counter input (HSC)

I hope you find the above comparison is helpful. If you have any comments, questions, or corrections please don’t hesitate to share them by using the “post a comment or question” link below.

Until next time, Peace ✌️

  1. Hello Shawn, I have an A-B Micro 1400 and bipolar stepper motor and a driver.. We want to hook up a stepper motor to the driver using the PTO function (s). A-B says we need to use BXB processor. We don’t have that yet. We want to see if we can use it at low frequencies using what we have (relay outputs).
Pulse output works (not correct counts). But the main question is do I need to use the second PTO function in 1400 to connect to the direction input?
Then we can worry about the exact counts, etc. No information that I can find from A-B yet.
Any information will be useful before we spend any money. (I work for an educational institute.)
I am trying this out at home on my 1200 unit.
    Thank you very much!

    • Hey @Bob Chaphalkar,

Just FYI – The average life of a RELAY on these PLCs is 500K to 1M operations, so while a slower PTO “may” work (if enabled in the software, with A-B it often is) the relay would likely not last a month at 20 cycles per minute.

If you’d like me to dive deeper into this for you I’ll need more details (and a cup of coffee) posted here -> https://Automation.Locals.com.

      Best of luck either way!

      Shawn
