Backup and Restore FactoryTalk ViewSE Projects

In this article, we will learn to take backup and restore the same project in the Factory Talk View SE application.

We all know how important it is to take backup for quick recovery from any disaster, and today we’ll review how to do so with the latest version of FactoryTalk ViewSE, version 13.

Backing up a Project

To take backup of your existing or any other project, you require an application named “Factory Talk View Application Manager”.

Note: In the current version, the FTViewME Application Manager has been migrated to a separate application, and if you have an existing shortcut it will launch the “ViewME Only” version. You can launch the new VeiwSE Application Manager from the ViewStudio Tools menu as shown below – Ed.

When you opening the ViewSE Application Manager you will see the below pop-up to select your project from.

Here, you have to select the application type in which you have created your project.

As my project is in the “Network Distributed” application, I have to click on this to open the next screen.

Here as you can see above screen, to take a backup you have to click on “Create Backup”

Clicking on Create Backup will open the below screen where you can see projects you have created in the Network Distributed Application type:

Here, Test and Test1 are the projects which I created for testing purposes.

Now you’ll want to click on the project you wish to create a backup for, which in my case is the “Test” application.

Now you’ll see the following window:

In the red square above you can see the name of your system in which you are taking backup. Remember, if your system is on a network with multiple system names you need to choose the right system.

You can give a meaningful name in the “Archive Name” to keep things simple.

Then select the Target Folder to store the backup.

Finally, click on the “Backup” button to start the backup process. If your system name is wrong, then your backup will fail.

Your backup is now in process.

On completion, you will see the above attached pop-up showing a successful backup created.

Restoring a Backup

To Restore the Backup, you have to open the same application which you have opened for taking backup.

In this example I have a backup created for a “Local Station” project that I will show you to restore.

First Open “Factory Talk View Application Manager” and open “Local Station:”

Next, click on “Restore Archive” to proceed with the Selection of the Project.

The following window will open. Here, you have to choose a path for your backup to restore.

In my example my project is named “Test,” so I will proceed with this name.

Clicking on Test will open up a window on the right side as you can see below the image:

First, choose “Scope of Restore” as the restore application.

Secondly, keep in mind the “Primary Host” which is the name of your system, or if you have selected as localhost, it will come as localhost.

In this example it is showing localhost because we are restoring applications from Local Station, as opposed to a Distributed Application.

Additionally, if your project contains Data, Alarm, and/or Tag Servers, it will also show in the list to restore.

Note that if you are restoring a project from the Network Distributed Application, you may see multiple options to choose from in the “Primary Host” field.

Now select your system name to restore it to, and click on “Restore” to start restoring the backup.

Soon, you will see a pop-up showing “Restore Completed Successfully,” as you have seen for creating a backup.

Note: For any application type, the procedure of taking backup and restoring will remain the same.

Hope you will find this article informative and useful.

View Studio Site Edition – Command Line

Although Command Line is a simple thing to use, many people are not familiar with it. In this article, we’ll learn the use of the Command Line Function in FactoryTalk View  Studio Enterprise.

Before we start, it should be noted that the Command Line feature of FactoryTalk View Studio is a feature of View Site Edition and not View Machine Edition.

For those who don’t know, View Site Edition, or ViewSE for short, includes both HMI and SCADA functionality, while View Machine Edition (ViewME) is strictly promoted as an HMI product.

In short, this means that with ViewSE you’re unlimited in the variety of functions you can create yourself, including by way of the Commend Line.

Editor’s note: The Command Line feature found in ViewSE operates just like the command line found in the legacy package, RSView32 (originally ControlView for Windows in alpha, and renamed RSView during the beta,) which debuted in the mid to late 90’s, and just recently reached end of life – ST.

Opening a Project

Open Factory Talk Studio and open one of the application types marked in the below-mentioned image:

Create a new project or open an existing one. If you have created an HMI server then your project will look like this.

Under System, you can see the Command Line function:

Command Line

Command Line is a function that is used to execute commands when you are developing a project, or your data log is in testing mode.

It is executing commands when you are online with an application. When you close an application, you will lose your command. So, this is a temporary command used to test your created data log model.

We use macros for fixed commands. In macros, we can write a command to execute the data log On while startup of the application, and on the closing of the application, we can Off the data log. Same thing we do in Command Line but for temporary execution. We will understand this by using a small example.

Command Line with Example

Let’s create a display in which I am adding a trend. I will create a couple of memory tags to add to the trend display and to add to the data log model.

After Creating Tags, we will be adding those tags to the data log model as mentioned in the below image.

We will monitor those tags in a trend, which you can see in the below image:

To add tags, you must double click on the Trend display and select the data log model from the dropdown.

Select your created data log model and add those tags to the list. If you hit the ok, then you will find tags were added to the trend display.

Now, let’s monitor added tags. As you can see in the below image that data has started logging but, if you play again, you won’t see any historical data logging and only see live data.

Here, you can see that no historical data is logged:

To log historical data, we must turn On the data log model which we created. Normally in the final application, we keep this in macros but, for testing in development, we add this to a command line.

Open Command Line, double click on a blank area, and the following popup will open. You can see Two options DataLogOn and DataLogOff, Which are used to turn the On and Off data log model to Log Historical data.

Click On DataLogOn and hit the “Next” button.

The following popup will open. Select the file you want to add. This file is which we created in Data Log Model.

Hit “Finish”.

As you can see that our command is added to the command line:

Hit Enter key to execute the command. The command will be erased as soon as you hit enter button.

In the same way, you can add as many commands as possible from the list and easily execute them from here.

In conclusion, Command Line is the simplest of things in Factory Talk View SCADA, which is used to execute on-demand Command without adding it to macros and make changes every time without finalizing it.

Hope you will find this article informative and useful.

Sharing Data Between A-B Programmable Controllers (MSG)

Recently, one of our community members asked how he could go about sharing data between various Allen-Bradley PLCs.

First he needed to share Tag Values between two ControlLogix controllers, after which he needed to read data into his ControlLogix from various legacy A-B PLCs.

PAC Basics lesson on using Message Instruction in ControlLogix

Over the last thirty years I’ve found the standard way to share data between Allen-Bradley PLCs (going back to the PLC-5 which released in ~1986) has been to use the Message Instruction (MSG.)

Now some might point out here that you can also use Produced and Consumed Tags, and that is a completely legitimate way to share data between Logix controllers like the ControlLogix and CompactLogix.

However, as I cover in my courses, there are some restrictions to using Produced and Consumed tags, and of course you can’t use them with legacy A-B PLCs.

So that brings us back to using the Message Instruction to either Read or Write data from one A-B PLC (or PAC) to another.

But before I go any further, I want to answer some common questions:

First, you don’t need to add a Message Instruction in both PLCs. Only one PLC needs to have either a Read or a Write Message Instruction to be able to read or write data to a second PLC.

Second, your A-B PLC/PAC does not have an “unlimited” Message Buffer, and therefore can only process a limited number of messages at any one time.

Just as you can overload your PC’s keyboard buffer by typing extremely fast (especially if your PC is just booting up or busy doing something else) if you execute too many Message instructions in a short period of time, you will fill the Message buffer and at that point all additional Messages will be discarded until there is room again in the buffer.

Third, your PLC/PAC communications ports, network modules, and actual network do not have infinite bandwidth, and the older and slower the technology is, the fewer messages per second it will be able to handle.

When it comes to the ControlLogix or CompactLogix and Ethernet, the best way I’ve found to keep track of how much capacity I have is to use the Ethernet/IP Capacity tool that I walk through using here.

Messaging between Allen-Bradley Programmable controllers

In my experience, messaging data between ControlLogix or CompactLogix controllers is no more difficult than with any other A-B PLC, and in the below video I walk through how to Read Data into a ControlLogix from a CompactLogix, SLC-500, and MicroLogix over Ethernet:

In this next video, I cover how to Write data from one Logix PAC to another over Ethernet:

Next up is how to Read data into a ControlLogix from a CompactLogix, MicroLogix, and SLC-500 over Data Sidewalk (DH-485):

But what if you have a MicroLogix or other old device that only has DF1, and your Logix PAC is on Ethernet? Well, in the below video I walk you through using the 1761-NET-ENI replacement from Real Time Automation (RTA) to do just that:

And for those of you with PLC-5 or SLC-5/04 on Data Highway Plus (DH+), I walk through using the Message Instruction in Logix to Read from those PLCs:

And for our final Logix example, in this article from our freelancer Brandon Cooper, you’ll learn how to send data from a ControlLogix to a Micro800 over Ethernet:

While that’s all we have on ControlLogix and CompactLogix, as I stated above I’ve been using Message instructions to transfer data between PLCs going all the way back to the PLC-5.

So for those of you trying to send data between some of these older A-B PLCs, I’ve created the following content:

Messaging data from a MicroLogix 1400 to a MicroLogix 1100 over Ethernet:

Messaging data from a MicroLogix to a SLC-5/05 on Ethernet:

Messaging data from a SLC-5/05 to a MicroLogix on Ethernet:

Hopefully that dozen examples above will help you out next time you need to share Data between A-B PLCs!

Keep in mind you can get all 280+ of my videos (including all of the above) totaling over 29 hours on USB ($35) or Digital ($30) right here, which is a great way to show your appreciation if you find them helpful.

And if you run into any trouble, you can always post your questions in my community here, or in my courses at TheAutomationSchool.com.
